Video game characters have become icons, and video game iconography has entered the mainstream... Not surprisingly, VIDEO GAMES have had a profound impact on NEW ART. This art show, which coincides with the acclaimed Game Developer's Conference at the Moscone Center, showcases eight stellar emerging artists whose work has been influenced by video games.  This is our third art show in Polo's Blue Cube, San Francisco's newest club + event space. The entire venue is being transformed for this event, and we have a pretty good show lined up. Featuring everything from great new art + amazing music, to classic video games and a bunch of surprise guests, this should be one of our best art shows so far...and it is FREE! NO COVER! ...and it is also our TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY! astounding visuals + multimedia by video art pioneer STEFAN G. electronic rhythm + 8-bit sonic explorations mixed LIVE by CHAOTRON and a special appearance by the SuicideGirls... and did we mention that all this (and more!) is FREE? |

 FRIDAY | APRIL 15 HOTEL DES ARTS Last year, START SOMA launched an art gallery in HOTEL DES ARTS - a boutique 51 room art hotel in the heart of Union Square. Over the past months, some of the premier emerging artists in the world have been painting rooms in the Hotel des Arts. |
 Floor to ceiling, and pretty much everything in between - with full autonomy to do whatever they wanted. Last year, we showcased 16 PAINTED ROOMS. On April 15, we unveil 16 more. |

START SOMA TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY |
 Two years in March. A couple dozen art shows. Several hundred emerging artists exhibited. Several thousand original works of new art showcased. Our artist in residence program has enabled the CREATION of new art. Over 100 MUSICIANS have performed at our art shows over the past two years. Including THE ARCADE FIRE! Our art shows + charitable events have helped raise over $100,000 for some great non-profits. Including Visual Aid. Danny Glover's TransAfrica Forum. The San Francisco Late Night Coalition. Save the Children. The Rainbow World Fund. Best Buddies. The San Francisco AIDS Emergency Fund. CARE. Glide Memorial Church. Companies like SUN + SCION have commissioned our artists for creative projects. START SOMA has received LOTS of press coverage. Most of it positive! ;-) We have received a few hundred nice testimonials from emerging artists + new collectors. And these goofy emails that you tolerate every few weeks are actually up for an ACE AWARD! Over the past two years, we have hosted art shows in a downtown loft. The backroom of a concert hall. Converted dot-com office space. A mission district warehouse. A couple night clubs. Fancy corporate event spaces. A turn-of-the-century boutique hotel. And San Francisco's City Hall. We have sold a lot of NEW ART. Some of our customers are famous. Most aren't. Many bought their very first pieces of new art from us. All of this with a part-time team. Bootstrapped.  David DeRosa is a top-notch talent who had the first public exhibition of his paintings at START SOMA this past year. His work resonated, and he has been an artist in residence at START SOMA for the past nine months. He quit his day job and has been painting around the clock ever since... Over the past months, David has completed portraits in his signature after image style for a whole host of decidedly interesting characters. |

David has been hired by SUN and SCION for art projects, and he just finished a series of posters for an electro-pop band from Rome who took advantage of his 'free art for emerging musicians' program! We have had to re-schedule his first solo show half-a-dozen times because his work sells directly from the studio before it is even dry! And remember - you do NOT need to own a Bentley to afford a DeRosa commission - prices start at $500... |

 + Salifu Mohammed's FIRST solo show! Salifu grew up in the village of Wa in the upper west region of northern Ghana, called Busa. He has exhibited at galleries + museums in his native Ghana, and his work is in numerous permanent + private collections throughout Africa, Europe, and the United States. Salifu recently moved to San Francisco, and this is his FIRST solo show in the US. START SOMA is absolutely honored to showcase his large format oil paintings, which are simply mesmerizing in person. |
